What to Expect

YOUR FIRST SESSION

Beginning Individual or Couple's Therapy is a big decision and one that should begin with a therapist who is able to understand the complexities of relationships. Therapy can indeed be both liberating and anxiety-provoking. It is essential to work with a therapist who challenges your current thought process as well as having compassion and empathy.

Scheduling your first therapy session means you want to begin living the life you want.

How long does therapy last?

This is a difficult question to answer since everyone comes in with varying degrees of topics and issues. It depends on factors such as the type of problem a couple or individual client is seeking treatment for, how often someone attends sessions, and also how motivated they will work towards their goals.

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

In Individual Therapy, it is suggested that initial sessions are scheduled once/week. This allows for the therapeutic relationship between therapist and client to form and also for deep work to begin. After that, it may be less frequent and can be discussed as therapy continues. Some clients may benefit from attending therapy several times a week due to a current crisis or due to needing a more supportive/therapeutic intervention. Every person is different and will be assessed during the first session.

COUPLES THERAPY

With Couples Therapy, a commitment of 12 sessions is recommended. We will explore in depth why you sought therapy and seek to unravel all you have experienced together, as a couple and even before you were together. Couples therapy can be challenging but also strengthening to your relationship.  Many couples experience a “New Marriage” with the same person after going through therapy. We will explore the various aspects of your relationship to seek a better understanding of each another. The hope is that your new relationship is THRIVING not just SURVIVING. In our sessions I utilize my training in various types of therapy modalities including Imago Therapy and training with Esther Perel. The hope is that individuals and couples can use these various techniques outside of the therapy room throughout their lifetime and in various relationships.

Is insurance accepted?

Champion Counseling is not on any insurance panels and is considered an “Out of Network” provider. The reason for this decision is that insurance companies require a mental health diagnosis in order to provide treatment and can jeopardize patient confidentiality. Insurance companies have a right to demand details and limit the number of sessions regarding therapy.

Payment is due at the time of your session. If you wish to pursue insurance reimbursement, it is essential to verify your “out of network” mental health coverage with your provider. A statement of services rendered can be provided for you to submit to your insurance carrier. In many instances, the reimbursement rate may be equal to a copay amount.

"6 years ago, I decided to make a decision about my mental health and saw Yvonne. I was dealing with relationship difficulties past and present, as well as some depression. I've learned a lot over the years about myself and relationships with others, thanks to Yvonne. She's not only a great therapist but an excellent teacher."
